Heavenly Snow Angels and Inappropriate Behavior

It is difficult to capture stories about my 9 year old son, William compared to the daily stories his tenacious sister, Zora generates. William is a low key, low maintenance child.  Like his father, he is a man of few words. But after a long day of skiing and seeing a heavenly snow angel for the first time, he couldn't stop talking.

Over Thanksgiving, our family went to Lake Tahoe for a mini-ski vacation at Heavenly Resort with our dear friends, the Watsons.  The Watsons have two children who are the same age as William and Zora. William and Richard are on the same soccer team and Zora and Angela are in the same Girl Scout troop.

After a full day of skiing and snowboarding, the plan was to meet in the lodge for happy hour. Throughout the day, the resort staff kept telling us how much fun the happy hour dance party would be and that it was an event not to be missed. We assumed they meant an event for the entire family. So, we met in the lodge where the music was booming, drinks were flowing, and the dance floor was on fire.  We found a table right in front of the dance floor and settled in.  Zora and Angela instantly started grooving to the music.  The "Heavenly Snow Angels" who were dancing on top of the speakers in bikinis with mesh tutus invited the kids to have their photos taken with them.  Zora and Angela couldn't get enough of the excitement and fun.  Every time I looked up they were in someone's photo or taking a photo or dancing with the crowd.  I must admit, the mommies were having fun too!

After breaking a sweat on the dance floor, I sit down between William and Richard who are begging me to leave. They say they are tired and want to go.  Since, they look so miserable, I decide to take them back down the mountain, so we can turn in our ski equipment and head back to the room.  The girls want to keep partying.

While waiting for the gondola, I ask William and Richard why they wanted to leave.  It was hard for me to believe that two 9 year old boys could possibly be tired.  At the exact same time and in the same commanding tone, both boys look at me and say "Clearly, that party was inappropriate for kids." Richard chimes in with "Why would a girl wear a swimsuit in the snow?" And William responds "maybe they just don't know any better - right Mommy?"

Then they proceeded to talk about all the things that parent’s do that they think are inappropriate, like "watching violent movies with curse words," "drinking coffee and soda," "talking on the cell phone while driving," and "making us go to bed while they stay up to watch TV." The two boys had a great time creating their list of things that grown-ups do that they think we should not do.

When we got back to the room, the two boys were as happy as they could be to be away from their crazy sisters and all of that loud music and most importantly, the scantily dressed snow angels who should have known better than to be dancing on the top of the speakers with bikinis on.

All I could say at that point was "Just wait until you're older."  I am sure these two boys will see things much differently!  And for their sisters, I just pray they see things differently as well.  Wearing a bathing suit in the snow is not exactly appropriate behavior or mommy approved.

  1. Art Linkletter knew that "kids as the darndest things." In this day and age, we take our children to places and expose them to adult life experiences in ways our parents' never would have allowed. Fortunately, they are smart enough to know when boundaries have been crossed. Thanks William and friend for reminding Mom that you're still just a kid! No more happy hours or snow angels!
